Why Inclusion Matters to Gen Z

Why inclusion matters to Gen Z

Generation Z, born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s, is often hailed as the most diverse generation in history. Growing up in an era of rapid globalization, social media, and increasing awareness of social justice issues, Gen Z has developed a unique perspective on the world – one that deeply values inclusion. But why does inclusion matter so much to this generation?

Perhaps the strongest evidence we have for the business case for diversity and inclusion is the newest generation entering the workforce: Generation Z were raised in a much different environment. Growing up in the height of immigration in the United States, there is no majority race for Gen Z and they increasingly see gender as fluid or a continuum rather than a binary. The world is not black or white or women or men to them.

I teach a class on inclusive leadership at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and my students teach me that they were raised in a diverse environment and expect inclusion of differences. That is an important distinction for leaders who hope to be relevant to future consumers and employees. Monster.com’s study validates this with 83% of Gen Z prioritizing diversity and inclusion when deciding where to apply for employment. Allyship is about relevance.

Gen Z’s world has always been diverse. They’ve grown up seeing a wider representation of races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender identities in their schools, communities, and media. This exposure has shaped their worldview, fostering an understanding that diversity is not just a buzzword, but a fundamental aspect of society. For Gen Z, inclusion is not about tolerating differences; it’s about celebrating them. They believe that everyone, regardless of their background, deserves to feel valued, respected, and have equal opportunities.

Gen Z’s Social Media and Awareness of inequalities and world perspectives

Social media has played a significant role in shaping Gen Z’s views on inclusion. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter have exposed them to a wide range of perspectives and experiences, raising their awareness of social injustices and inequalities. They’ve witnessed movements like Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights gain momentum, and they’ve used these platforms to amplify their own voices and advocate for change. Social media has not only educated Gen Z about the importance of inclusion but has also provided them with the tools to become active participants in creating a more inclusive world.

Gen Z’s Values and Expectations

Gen Z is known for being purpose-driven and socially conscious. They prioritize authenticity, transparency, and social responsibility. When it comes to inclusion, they have high expectations for the institutions and organizations they interact with. They expect their workplaces, schools, and communities to reflect the diversity they see in the world and to actively promote inclusion. Gen Z is not afraid to speak up and demand change if they feel that their values are not being met. They will choose to support businesses, brands, and employers that align with their beliefs and values.

Mental Health and Well-being are critical to Gen Z

Inclusion is not just a matter of social justice for Gen Z; it’s also crucial for their mental health and well-being. Feeling excluded or marginalized can have a significant negative impact on an individual’s self-esteem, confidence, and overall mental health. Gen Z is more open about mental health than previous generations, and they understand the importance of creating environments where everyone feels safe, accepted, and supported. Inclusive spaces foster a sense of belonging, which is essential for individuals to thrive.

Gen Z will shape the future of inclusion

Gen Z is poised to be the most influential generation in shaping the future of inclusion. As they enter the workforce, become consumers, and take on leadership roles, they will continue to push for a more inclusive world. Their passion, activism, and understanding of diversity will drive change in businesses, organizations, and communities. They are not content with superficial gestures; they want to see genuine commitment to inclusion at all levels. Gen Z’s vision for the future is one where everyone feels valued, respected, and has the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their background.
